Catalyst Cocktails is a San Francisco cocktail lounge and bar, complete with a fabulous small dinner menu. The interior has been newly decorated in a 1930's Art Deco style, with dark purple and gold as it's main colors. The clear glass lighted columns behind the bar, and the lighted wooden ceiling sculpture give a unique flair to this popular bar conveniently located across from the Hall of Justice in San Francisco's SOMA district. The focus in the house beverage menu is on fresh squeezed juice/fruit cocktails.

Yesterday's Be Nice Party was great! Thanks for everyone coming out and supporting the event! I will be working tonight (thursday the 13th) from 4-9 pm, friday 9/14, and saturday 9/15. I have made some additions to the cocktail menu which have been going over very well. (They've also been going very well at Orbit Room when I run them as specials!). You have to come by Catalyst and try them out. The top seller, and my personal favorite, is the Black Dahlia. This is a vodka based drink with fresh Blackberries, fruit and herbal infusions. Also delicious is the Sangre Amado, which tastes great with vodka or gin, and has fresh grapefruit juice. If you are a fan of the mojito, you have to try The Macarena. This tropical drink features mint, mango, rum, and coconut flavors.

"WHAT’S THE CONNECTION?" NIGHT
Six Degrees of Songs – Connected in Some Way
Play "What’s the Connection" and win prizes!
Two rounds starting at 10pm

9-10pm
The 1970's
DJ Skip (New Wave City) gets all Glamed up with some Bowie, some T. Rex, and maybe a dash of Roxy Music, and weaves it all together for a connected picture of 70’s music like some giant connect-the-dots portrait of Richard Nixon. Scary, and a little bad too.

10-11pm
The 1980's
DJ Candy (DECADE) starts the "What’s the Connection" contest off with a set that may include "Candy Girl" – New Edition, "Candy" – Iggy Pop, "I Want Candy" – Bow Wow Wow and still more sweet treats from the most delicious DJ around. Four out of five dentists recommend DJ Candy for their patients who eat DJ’s.

11-12am
The 1990’s
Tomas Diablo (Strangelove, Rock This Town) continues with round-two of the contest and sends you on a connected song journey through the 90’s with songs like "Pump Up the Jam" and "Pump Up the Volume". Not sure if Tomas will be dressed like Hans or Franz, but it sounds like he’s here to Pump! [handclap] You Up! Hear me now and believe me later...

12-1am
The 1980's
DJ Skip (New Wave City) spins your favorite 80’s connected songs. See if you can follow the links from Depeche Mode to Yaz to Erasure to The Cure to Duran Duran and on and on. Will he Go! or Don’t Go? Either way, as long as you Wake Me Up Before You Go Go ‘cause I’ll need a ride home at the end of the night after collapsing from dancing too hard to this set.

1am-2am
The 2000’s
DJ Candy (DECADE) spins the newest Indie, Pop, Electronica and remixes in what has quickly become a don’t-miss-this-final-set tradition that has been packing the dance floor at every event. Somehow the word must have gotten out because people are showing up just for this set. Find out what all the fuss is about.

11-12am
1980’s - "THOSE ARE PEOPLE WHO DIED"
DJ Candy (DECADE)
"The B-52’s took a dry dive from a hotel room,
Joy Division hung himself from a cell in the tombs,
The Ramones jumped in front of a subway train,
INXS got slit in the jugular vein.
Those are people who died, died. They were all my friends, and they died!"

12-1am
Special Set – "THE CLASH vs. AC/DC"
DJ Skip (New Wave City) referees a knockdown, drag-out, no-holds-barred
death match between the best of The Clash vs. the best of AC/DC.
Only one band will be left standing, Who will it be?

1-2am
2000’s – "DEATH IN THE FUTURE"
DJ Candy (DECADE). Everyone dies, but not everyone truly listens to Dead 60's,
Miss Kittin, and Tomcraft. So, let’s make love and listen to Death from Above 1979,
and then you’ll find that death becomes her as she necro-feels-ya up!

In the beginning, 'Rock This Town' was just an idea for a one-night event. I brought together 3 different DJs from 3 different clubs, and the concept was to play music that we would NEVER be allowed to play at our own club. It was a huge success - everyone had a great time, the DJs got "freaky", and even the bartender got up and danced on the bar.

Since then, I've been astounded by the calibre of DJs who have been interested in "letting their freak flags fly". Skip and John from New Wave City. Merrick from Death Guild. Donimo from Shadowplay. Makita from Die Maschinen. Fact50 from Dark Sparkle. Candy from Decade. Shatter from Bondage-a-Go-Go. Voodoo from House of Voodoo. Orko from Compulsion... the list goes on and on. It reads like a "Who's Who" of San Francisco nightlife.

I hope you'll come down this Friday to help us celebrate 6 months of madness.

The DJ Dance Club
Every hour a different decade!

Friday, October 6th, 2006
"Make Me Dance Night"
The Best Dance Songs From Every Decade
FREE – No Cover All Night

"Music doesn’t make you forget your problems, but it lets you dance all over them."
-Pete Townsend

Every hour one song will be crowned "Best Dance Song of the Decade".
You vote by dancing!

9-10pm
1980’s - "NEW WAVE"
The debut of DJ Tesla Boy and the answer to the question: How is he going to wear headphones
with that big Mohawk? DJ TB will be spinning the best ‘80s dance tracks from the likes of OMD, XTC,
BC and SC (that’s Big Country and Soft Cell, if you were wondering) for your dancing pleasure.

10-11pm
1990’s - "CHEESE COVERED DANCE POP"
DJ Tomas Diablo (Strangelove) says, "I'll take the '90s, which means I can dip into great popular music,
some darker stuff, and top it off with a little cheese too. A musical smorgasbord!". And the best thing? It’s all
you can eat! Expect to hear Depeche Mode, Deee-Lite, Technotronic, Daft Punk, and a dash of Salt N' Pepa.

11-12am
1980’s – "OUT-OF-PRINT HARD-TO-FIND ‘80s 12-INCHES"
DJ John (New Wave City) whips out his big twelve inches and exposes bands like Bronski Beat, Cetu Javu,
Cube, Desireless and Until December. This is your chance to see DJ John spin while wearing a trench coat,
and nothing else.

12-1am
1970’s – "NIGHT ON DISCO MOUNTAIN"
Yeah, they were dancin' and singin' and movin' to the groovin'
and just when it hit me somebody turned around and shouted
play that funky music DJ Skip from New Wave City…so I did!
Expect to get up and get down to Wild Cherry, KC & the Sunshine Band,
Earth Wind & Fire, and Abba.

1-2am
2000’s – "INDIE/DANCE POP"
DJ Candy (DECADE) cranks up the LCD Soundsystem, takes over the whole street for a Bloc Party,
produces some Gorillaz in her mist, and if you aren’t dancin’, then She Wants Revenge.

Don't be surprised to see this ad in the paper the next day-
LOST: Asses. Last seen at DECADE where they were danced off.
Mancub (Space Cowboys/Sleevin Records)
It is hard to nail his style down, most would say “funky, sometimes nasty”.Chip “Mancub” Corwin is currently voted as a top ten dj of San Francisco. He has been blowing up the block party jams for over ten years. Mancub has a very diffinitive style of turntable tricks that have earned him slots beside some of the dance industry’s biggest headliners. His turntable antics are too numerous to mention but include scratching while wearing boxing gloves, he certainly knows how to work the crowd into a frenzy!!

Big San Francisco Quake predicted for Sunday, May 28th

Scientists have unanimously concluded that the next big quake will hit San Francisco on Sunday, May 28th, between 9PM and 2AM. They have even managed to pinpoint the exact location of the epicenter - at a lovely art deco bar named Catalyst Cocktails, at 312 Harriet Street (off Bryant between 6th and 7th).

"Normally we can't predict such an event with any certainty," said Dr. Feelgood of the San Francisco Booty Quake Society. "But this time we're sure. There will be three incredible forces of nature convening on that exact spot at that time - it's a "perfect storm" scenario. At the very least, we expect to experience a house quake."

The three "forces of nature" that Dr. Feelgood refers to are DJ Skip from New Wave City, pHreaki bOi from Spin THIS, and Tomas Diablo of Strangelove. "We consider the seismic force of '80s new wave and rock, '90s dance and new electro all under one roof to be substantial. And we can't stress enough the importance of being prepared for such an event. Make sure you have access to both a beverage and the dancefloor at all times."

The event is free (no cover!), so this reporter will definitely be there to enjoy the music and the incredible fruit-infused drinks. On Sunday of Memorial Day weekend - where will YOU be for this historic occasion?

I've been listening to samples of their music at their website, and I'm really impressed. Amy's vocal stylings remind me of Rickie Lee Jones and Dianne Schuur, and they perform timeless classics from the realms of jazz, bossa nova, swing and blues.

At 8:30, DJ Tomas Diablo will continue the vibe by spinning jazz, swing, bossa nova, and lounge... and eventually transition into new wave, electro, and rock. Expect to hear artists like Jobim, Gilberto, Ella, Louis, Sinatra, Ray Charles, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. After 10, you can expect to hear artists like New Order, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, the B-52's, Prince and Goldfrapp.

There's NO COVER all night. Catalyst Cocktails also has a great dinner menu (which is available on their site), and I'll definitely be having dinner while enjoying the live jazz.

Catalyst Cocktails is located at 312 Harriet Street, off Bryant between 6th and 7th. It's across from the courthouse, in the "bail bonds" area. Catalyst is a gorgeous art-deco bar with original art and fresh fruit-infused beverages (how many bars can you name that will crush fresh fruit right in front of you for a cocktail?)
*If you're not familiar with the music term "cover", that's when an artist/band records a song that has already been done by another artist/band. For example, No Doubt recently had a "hit" with their cover of Talk Talk's "It's My Life". So, DJ's will either play the cover, or the original, based on which decade they are playing. Hopefully, how many songs that you already know, which are actually covers, will surprise you. Like, did you know that "Tainted Love", "I Want Candy" and "One Step Beyond" are all covers?
So you'd be all snug in your PJ's with covers. Get it?
DECADE
The DJ Dance Club
Every hour a different decade!

Friday, March 3rd, 2006
Sponsored by CATALYST COCKTAILS
1-Year Anniversary Party
"THE BEST OF DECADE"
Reprising some of our favorite set themes from the past year! DJ's will not be repeating their sets exactly, but will be trying to recapture the excitement and thrill of "the first time".

DECADE began with an event on March 25, 2005 at The Cherry Bar & Lounge in San Francisco, and continued there through June. In July, DECADE made the move to Catalyst Cocktails catalystcocktails.com/ , picked by CitySearch editors as one of the "Top 10 New Bars of 2005". A charming little back-alley bar with a stylish 1920’s-Paris Art Deco interior and expertly concocted cocktails.

"THE BEST OF DECADE"

9-10pm
From "DECADE # 2" (04/08/05)
2000’s SYNTH POP
DJ - John (New Wave City) presents you with the key to Synth City. Expect to hear keyboard-heavy cuts from Erasure, Wolfsheim, Halovox, Assemblage 23 and more from the burgeoning 2000’s Synth scene.

10-11pm
From "NITECLUB NIGHT" (02/03/06)
1980’s THE I-BEAM NIGHTCLUB
DJ Skip (New Wave City). In the early ‘80s, one nightclub stood out above all the others- the I-Beam. Renowned for their live shows on Monday nights (Duran Duran & New Order among countless others played there) and the have-to-be-there Tuesday nights of dancing to the newest New Wave. Hear early New Wave faves from Depeche Mode, The Chameleons, Blondie, A Flock of Seagulls and more.

11-12am
From "Guilty Pleasures" Night (08/19/05)
1990’s DANCE CHEEZ
DJ Tomas Diablo (Strangelove). Behold...the power of cheez! Tomas whizzes out make-me-dance favorites from Spice Girls, C & C Music Factory, Right Said Fred, Milli Vanilli and more songs that will make smile and say, "Cheez I’m glad the ‘90s are over".

12-1am
From "FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE FIGHTS" (12/02/05)
1980’s PRINCE vs. MADONNA vs. MICHAEL JACKSON
DJ The Melting Girl (Death Guild, 1984) instigates a Thunderdome style cage match brawl between The Purple One, The Material Girl and The King of Pedophile. When the smoke clears, only one will be left standing- who will it be?
1-2am
From "Guilty Pleasures" Night (08/19/05)
1970’s DISCO
Catalyst Cocktails 312 Harriet St. (415) 621.1772

NEIGHBORHOOD: SOMA

On the lowdown: Since last year

Finder’s Keepers: Sometimes, springing bail is good cause for celebration. Adjacent to Dad’s Bail Bonds — among a slew of other bail bond hideaways — and across the street from the Hall of Justice, Catalyst Cocktails is a hybridized hipster hangout that is equal parts lounge, nightclub, neighborhood bar and restaurant. With a drink menu that reads like a spiked smoothie bar, one would be hard-pressed to leave tasting only just one — knock back a strawberry mojito or a blackberry margarita to get that recommended daily serving of fruit, or to celebrate that case you’ve just won. For the not so lucky, the Philly Special — a shot of Jim Beam backed up with a Pabst Blue Ribbon — will provide temporary relief.

Secret Recipe: Just try to find a bottle of sour mix on the well-stocked bar. We dare you. The people at Catalyst take great pride in the fact that only the most palatable produce finds its way onto the long menu of signature cocktails. So remember real raspberries were hurt in the process of making that raspberry cosmopolitan you’re draining.

Sneak a Peek: For such a teensy hideaway, management packs in entertainment. Every Tuesday, musicians of all walks are welcome to join in on Catalyst’s jam sessions. Thursdays and Fridays also boast live jazz, and on the first Friday of each month, the bar organizes a themed party, such as February’s “Decade,” which featured five hours of music, each hour dedicated to one special decade.
